Dog Arthritis vs. Dysplasia: Understanding the Difference

Dog Arthritis vs. Dysplasia: Understanding the Difference

Dog Arthritis vs. Dysplasia: What’s the Difference?

Many pet parents hear these terms but aren’t sure how they differ. Both affect mobility, but in different ways.

Here’s your simple guide.

What Is Arthritis?

Arthritis refers to joint inflammation and the gradual wearing down of cartilage.

It often shows up as:

  • Stiffness

  • Slower movement

  • Difficulty getting up/laying down

  • Decreased interest in play

  • Hesitation to run or jump

  • Favoring a limb or side of the body when standing or sitting

It can occur in any adult or senior dog. Some large breed dogs are prone to early onset Osteoarthritis and may show signs early in life. Genetics and life conditions play a role in the onset and severity of it.

Studies show that 1 out of 4 dogs and 80% of adult/senior dogs will suffer from arthritis throughout their life.

What Is Dysplasia?

Dysplasia is a developmental issue where the joint doesn’t form correctly, leading to instability. In most cases of dysplasia, instability, pain and discomfort are caused by longterm wear and tear on these improperly formed joints.

It’s most common in:

  • Hips

  • Elbows

  • Large breeds

Over time, dysplasia can lead to painful arthritis, which is why early support is so helpful. Although large breeds are more prone to dysplasia, small breeds can also be impacted.

Key Differences

  • Arthritis = inflammation and cartilage wear

  • Dysplasia = structural joint issue

  • Dysplasia often leads to arthritis

How to Support Both Conditions

✔ Maintain a healthy weight
✔ Feed the proper amount and type of food
✔ Add low-impact exercise (daily walks, swimming, etc.)
✔ Provide supportive bedding
✔ Use ramps or non-slip mats
✔ Give daily joint support

Mobility supplements can help comfort, strength, and long-term wellness in dogs dealing with either issue.
